Electrical installations in Kitchens and bathrooms are covered under Part P of the Building Regulations. Bathrooms and Electrical Safety

  • An electrical shaver socket is the only electric socket permitted in a bathroom and has its own requirements under the regulations.
  • The bathroom is usually the wettest room in any home, so it is important to keep electrical appliances out of the room and the essential electrical supply as far away from water as possible.
  • It is preferable to use enclosed ceiling lights in a bathroom, rather than hanging bulbs with pull cords and no switches.
  • The electrical supply to any heating in the bathroom must be a safe distance from the bath or shower with fixed wiring only.
  • An electrical showers must be fed by its own circuit directly from the fusebox.
  • All lighting, heating and shower circuits serving the bathroom must be protected by a 30mA RCD.
  • Earthing is important to any installation and is required to be up to date with the latest wiring regulations. Before any work is carried out all metallic gas, oil and water pipes entering the building must be bonded with the correct size earth wire.

Kitchens and Electrical Safety

  • Water and electrical sockets should always be be kept apart. 30cm at the very least from the sink.
  • A switched fuse connection unit mounted above the worktop should be installed to supply any electrical equipment connected under the worktop to allow ease of access.
  • When using kitchen sockets to power portable equipment in the garden the socket should be protected by an RCD.
  • Ensure there are enough sockets in the kitchen to provide power to all your appliances as using too many extensions may overload the circuits.
  • The better planned your installation the safer and easier your life will be when it is complete.
